Orthotics and Footcare in Fairfax, VA
Orthotics are considered a preventative and conservative method for common orthopedic problems that can lead to pain, inflammation and other problems if left untreated. They can be prescribed in childhood, after an injury, or in adulthood depending on the issue and symptoms.
When to Consider Custom Foot Orthotics
A podiatrist will recommend assistive footwear or orthotics after a comprehensive exam and evaluation of your symptoms. Sometimes shoes are the first sign that you may need a little extra support. If the soles of your shoes become worn out or torn in a specific area, like on the inside of the ankles for example, it can be a sign that you are overpronating (ankles roll inward towards each other while you walk, or vice versa on the outer sides of the soles). Heel pain or on the balls of your feet is another common problem that may indicate an issue with your gait or an injury like plantar fasciitis. Orthotics may also be prescribed after a foot or ankle injury that it heals correctly and to prevent excess pressure on your joints.
There are three basic categories of foot orthotics: rigid, semi-rigid, and soft. The podiatrist will recommend the best type for you depending on your foot type, symptoms, and the extent of strain or damage to your feet or ankles.
