Causes of Heel Pain

More often than not, heel pain is caused by plantar fasciitis, a condition that causes inflammation within the plantar fascia tissue, which run from the toes to the heel bone. While this is usually the most common reason for heel pain, there are certainly other conditions that could lead to foot pain including:

  • Achilles tendinitis
  • Heel spur
  • Bursitis
  • Heel pad inflammation
  • Tarsal tunnel syndrome
  • Stress fracture

Less common causes of heel pain include:

  • Bruised bone
  • Peripheral neuropathy
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Morton’s neuroma

How do you know if your heel pain is due to plantar fasciitis?

It isn’t always easy to be able to determine this on your own. With plantar fasciitis the sufferer will most often experience the worst pain when first getting up and moving around in the morning. The more you start to move around the less pain you may notice over time. As a result, you may end up thinking that your feet are fine enough to work out. If you exercise you may find that the pain quickly returns with a vengeance immediately after. You may also notice the pain getting worse when standing for long periods of time.

How is plantar fasciitis treated?

Most people with plantar fasciitis can easily manage their symptoms with simple at-home care. Give your feet a break and avoid high impact activities that could make symptoms worse. Ice the heel and take pain relievers when you are experiencing discomfort. Talk to us about whether wearing custom orthotics or splinting the foot could also provide additional support for the arches of your feet.
